The RIHGA Royal Hotel first opened as the Hotel New Osaka on January 16, 1935, the city's first world-class hotel. With the rapid industrialization of Japan, a meteoric rise in room demand led to the construction of a much larger building at the current site in 1965, and the name was changed to the Osaka Royal Hotel. Since then, the Royal Hotel name, analogous with unsurpassed quality and service, has spread throughout western Japan with the addition to the Group of the Osaka Grand Hotel, the Kyoto Grand Hotel and the Nakanoshima Inn to serve the customers in other major cities. The Hiroshima Grand Hotel closed its doors in 1994, when the RIHGA Royal Hotel Hiroshima opened.
Five member hotels have undergone a change in names as of April 1st 1997. The new names clearly identify them as RIHGA Royal Hotels.
Affected by the changes are the Royal Hotel, renamed the RIHGA Royal, the Hotel Osaka Grand, renamed the RIHGA Grand Hotel, the Nakanoshima Inn, renamed the RIHGA Nakansohima Inn, the Kyoto Grand Hotel, renamed the RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto, and the Cairns Colonial Club Resort. |
