Air Berlin

Description: On 28th April 1979 the first Air Berlin flight took off from Berlin-Tegel to Palma de Mallorca. Germany's favourite holiday island is still the prime destination of Air Berlin's route network. The "Majorca Shuttle" operates daily flights from 12 German airports. The total number of weekly flights to Majorca has increased from 140 (summer 2001) to over 160 (summer 2002). In the summer of 2003 there were as many as 225 flights to choose from. But Air Berlin also regularly serves all the other major holiday destinations on the Mediterranean coast, as well as in the Canary Islands, Portugal and North Africa. In the winter of 1998/1999, for instance, the Spanish mainland experienced a renaissance, which is why Alicante, Almeria, Malaga and Jerez de la Frontera have long been an integral part of our flight schedule. The same applies to all the Canary Islands, Greece and its many islands, the south of Italy, Turkey, Faro in Portugal, Madeira, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt.
In October 2002 Air Berlin launched a new product: the "City Shuttle". It connects nine German airports with major European cities such as London, Rome, Milan, Budapest, Zurich, Vienna and Barcelona as well as offering flights to Palma de Mallorca and destinations on the Spanish mainland (Malaga, Alicante, Sevilla, Madrid and Valencia), setting new standards in terms of price and service. Air Berlin has long been a member of IATA (International Air Transport Association) and consequently a scheduled air carrier. Bookings can now be made using any of the standard international systems - which therefore includes connecting flights within the scope of interlining with other scheduled air carriers.
At the start of 2004 Air Berlin acquired a 24 per cent stake in "NIKI", the new airline owned by the Austrian Niki Lauda, three times Formula One world champion. At the same time Air Berlin acts as service provider for the areas of marketing, sales and logistics. The objective of the first European low-fare alliance is the joint development of the Austrian and eastern European markets.
